1.TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF.
HI! I'm Kristi Tretter. I'm 29 years old (soaking up the last couple months before I turn 30). I'm a mom to an active, loveable toddler. I'm a wife, a sister, a dog-mom, and an aunt. I teach at Rush-Henrietta High School. My family lives in Batavia.
2. WHAT MADE YOU START CROSSFIT?
In July (2017), my sister-in-law, Alyssa, asked her cousin, Megan, and me to come to a free class that CFSF was hosting. My initial reaction was to laugh at her. Alyssa has been a CrossFitter for a long time, and I was genuinely surprised she even asked us to go. I had preconceived notions of what CrossFit was (big egos, lifting tires all day, etc. lol). I was super out of shape, but I was desperate to try something different. As a new mom, I was eagerly searching for something to help me find my sense of self, and to feel confident again in my own skin. At the last second, I decided to go. It was one of the best decisions I've ever made. I can't imagine my life without it now.
3. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED SINCE JOINING CFSF?
Well, I've learned that you don't flip tires all day (Ha!). In all seriousness, I've learned so much since joining CrossFit. Before I started, I was out of shape, had never picked up a barbell, had never jumped on a box, had never done a pull-up, etc. My point is, you don't have to fit certain stereotypes in order to join CrossFit. Beginner, advanced, super body builder...... it's never too late, or too early, to join. I wish I had signed up years ago. There are modifications to every workout. There are a hundred different ways to go about certain movements. You work your way up. You are challenged every day. In addition, I've learned a lot about myself in these last seven months. I've learned how to acquire some patience. I've learned how to have some confidence in myself (still working on it!). I've learned that this experience is a journey, not a sprint. I've learned that nerves and frustration are aspects of the process that are worth embracing. I've learned that being strong is so much more important than being thin (something I thought I always wanted).
4.WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT CFSF?
I no longer second guess getting out of the bed at 4:30am to make the 5am class. Friends and co-workers always say, "I don't know how you do it." The truth is, there is no other way I'd rather start my day (since my husband and son are sleeping, anyway!). In a messed up way, I look forward to it every morning. Love/Hate relationship. It is the one hour out of the day that is just mine. I work hard, have fun, and then I'm ready for the day. When I start off my day this way, I feel energized, focused, and "with it."
Aside from that, I enjoy the people that make up CFSF. We laugh. We swear. We dance (oh, just me?). We cheer each other on. We challenge each other. The 5am-ers, and all the people I've met throughout the last seven months, are what make CFSF more than just a gym. There is not one day that goes by where Megan, Alyssa, and I don't chat about CF at some point (so much so that our families have even joined!). I've met so many cool people.
I enjoy Jason's coaching style. He is adamant about technique and will correct your form. I appreciate that and all he does to make sure everyone is successful.
5. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST CROSSFIT MOMENT?
One of my proudest, CF moments is finishing THE OPEN. When I signed up for CFSF in August 2017, I swore I would never compete. In fact, my exact words were, "I'll never, EVER compete." However, when THE OPEN announcements blasted through social media, and allowed for scaled workouts, I decided to give it a go. Throughout THE OPEN, I was challenged immensely and accomplished so much (kipping pull-ups - two at a time!). I'm proud of myself for taking on the challenge and signing up. I'm already thinking about my goals for next year because of THE OPEN.
6. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVEMENT/LIFT? LEAST FAVORITE?
I can't believe I'm saying this, but one favorite movement of mine is the box-jump. I think it's because when I started I couldn't even fathom it. I started on the shortest box and have slowly worked my way up. It just feels good....I don't know how to explain it. Somethin' about jumpin' on things haha!
Least favorite lift is snatch. I say least favorite because I struggle with it the most. I overthink everything. I'm working on it.
7. WHAT ARE YOUR CROSSFIT GOALS? HOW CLOSE ARE YOU TO REACHING THEM?
- Work on form for heavy lifts
- Get the kipping rhythm down (hoping by June to get more than two in a row).
- Toes-to-bar -EVEN JUST ONE- by August 2018
- Don't throw-up during Festivus
- Get Megan to sign-up for Festivus
- Don't get yelled at by Jason (Haha!)
- Double-Unders - Before I die
- RXing the Open in 2019
- Confidence with heavy lifts
-Hand-stand-push ups with no ab mats- Before I die

8. WHAT IMPACT HAS CFSF HAD ON YOUR LIFE IN AND OUT OF THE GYM?
CFSF has had a tremendously positive impact on my life. As I mentioned earlier, I was looking for something to whip me into shape post-pregnancy. I feel strong. I feel confident. It's an amazing form of self-therapy. When I workout, I just feel good. It keeps me focused and energized. I'm a better mom, a better wife, a better teacher, etc. when I start off my day at CFSF.
9. WHEN YOU’RE NOT CROSSFITTING, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO?
When I'm not CrossFitting my favorite things are:
Being a mom and exploring the world through my toddler's eyes.
Hanging with my husband (when we actually get a moment to go out and about!).
Being around friends/family.
10. WHAT IS ONE FUN THING ABOUT YOU THAT WE MAY NOT KNOW YET?
I have a loud, obnoxious laugh. Oh, wait....everyone knows that.
Um, I dance to Taylor Swift in the car before 5am class. Those dance moves usually make an appearance throughout the entire class.
Ketchup is a basic food group of mine.
If I could, I would have a tattoo sleeve.
11. THE ONE TIP YOU’D GIVE SOMEONE WHO IS THINKING ABOUT STARTING CROSSFIT OR JUST STARTED?
Start right now. Embrace the challenges. Get to know people. Be a sponge.
12. WHAT IS YOUR DIET LIKE? HAS IT CHANGED SINCE STARTING CROSSFIT?
I have been on a plant-based/vegan diet for two and a half years (#VeganNation #TofuLife). Since joining CFSF, I am more aware of junky/processed food and my alcohol intake (when you work so hard in the gym... you don't want to negate all of the work with crap food/feeling crappy, etc.).
13. RESULTS? TELL US ABOUT YOUR RESULTS!
My one regret is not getting my measurements done when I first joined in August 2017 (although the pictures say more than enough!). I do know my starting weight, so in regards to that, I'm down 20lbs since I've joined. My body fat has also decreased, and I know this from participating in the six week challenge in January (in that six weeks I lost 5% body fat- I can't imagine what my starting % was at). I'm learning that results are more than numbers these days, though. I feel stronger. I'm happier. I'm energized. I enjoy clothes shopping again. That's more than enough to make me feel like every workout, every dollar, is worth it.
I just wanted to take the time to say thank you to the coaches, Jason and Jenn. Jen led the on-ramp program and has such a "can-do" attitude. I felt nervous and didn't think I was someone who could ever "do CrossFit," and she completely changed that mind-set by modifying any workout needed. I don't get the chance to attend her 9am class much, but I'm thankful I started my journey off with her. I give so much thanks to Jason for not only putting up with me, but for challenging, supporting, and correcting me every class. He truly is a passionate, genuine guy who wants everyone to be successful. I trust his judgment and his process. I don't think I'd be where I'm at now at any other gym under any other coach. Ritchie- Thanks for bringing our CF community together with the Facebook Groups, updates, website info, humor, etc. I know you do a lot behind the scenes! Thank you all.
